Yahoo has kept itself in the news today, first with its $ 1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr, and now, saying “We want to make Flickr awesome again,” Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has announced updates to Yahoo’s photo sharing service, which includes 1TB of free photo storage for users of the service.

GigaOM:

Flickr is getting three big updates. All users will get 1 terabyte of photo storage for free. The photo service’s interface is also being redesigned to focus on full-resolution photos, rather than words and links. And, in addition to the iOS app Flickr launched last December, there will now be an Android app.

The announcement was made today at a press conference Monday afternoon in New York where Mayer also announced that Yahoo has leased office space at 229 West 43rd Street — the old New York Times building — and will be housing all 500 of its New York-based employees there.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg took the stage to say the move reflects “what a big player New York has become in the tech industry,” with Yahoo becoming “one of the largest tech presences in the city.” He noted that Tumblr is a “New York-grown company” and that New York City was the first city government to have its own Tumblr presence.

Rovio blog:

Rovio Account lets you store your game progress and continue playing on another device.

Some of you may have noticed a new feature in your Rovio games called Rovio Account. Our fans have been asking for a way to play their game on different phones or tablets without losing their progress when changing the device. This is exactly what Rovio Account lets you do!

Rovio Account is currently available in The Croods game globally, and in the classic Angry Birds game on iOS in Finland and Poland. We will gradually introduce Rovio Account into more areas in the future and also add new features. Check out our FAQs if you have more questions!

Apple’s Game Center feature includes a way for developers to let users sync their progress in a game across devices. Unfortunately, however, the feature doesn’t always work well – and it doesn’t account for platforms other than Apple’s iOS. Rovio has a great answer with their new Rovio Accounts feature – a single sign-in that can sync your game progress across all devices and platforms!

Great job, Rovio. I hope to see other developers picking up on this – this is one of the strongest dampers against gaming on portable devices. Here’s to hoping Rovio has started the stone rolling in encouraging developers to address this.

Lukewarm Facebook Q1 2013 Earnings Due To Users Leaving?

Facebook has just revealed its revenue for the current quarter which has reached $ 1.46 billion. The figure is said to be 38 percent higher than what it has achieved during the same period of the previous year. Net income is measured at $ 312 million with earnings having 12 cents for every share.

Given these records, it seemed that Facebook wasn’t able to meet the expectations set by some of its investors. While there’s a steady growth in the revenues sector, Facebook’s public trading is in its record low.

On the other hand, Facebook’s mobile ad revenue is reported to have achieved $ 375 million which makes up the 30% of its total revenues. The record is said to have increased by as much as 23% when compared to last quarter’s revenues.

There are now at least 665 million active Facebook users worldwide which is relatively higher than the recorded 526 million in the first quarter of the previous year. However, Facebook’s popularity is now facing a dramatic decline as it is said to be losing millions of its users every month.

In the UK, users may be suffering from the so-called ‘Facebook fatigue’ as those who checked in to the social media site last month were recorded to be 1.4 million fewer. In a longer period, at least within the last six months, 9 million US visitors and 2 million UK visitors have stopped visiting the site.

The reason for this is the fact that Facebook users are leaving the network as they become more interested in newer social media sites. Users are suspected to have this ‘boredom factor’ and may have been skeptical on Facebook’s capacity to feature something new and unique.

Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg schemes on concocting new features with the hope of winning back its ‘bored’ members. The company is finding a way to increase its appeal among younger mobile users.

The most notable step to achieve this is the introduction of Facebook Home, downloadable software in selected Android devices. Mobile owners can easily view news feeds, friends’ photos, and advertising as the feature becomes available in their locked home screen.

NEC Terrain Mimics Blackberry, Remains Rugged For Users

A NEC phone coming to the United States is unheard of until now via a leaked image online. And what’s surprising is the AT&T logo on the surface and the Android thing inside, possibly Ice Cream Sandwich. And even more surprising is its QWERTY keyboard and camera. It is given the name NEC Terrain and it seems to be following the footsteps of BlackBerry as far as candy-bar design and keyboard are concerned.

This gives pundits the idea that NEC is still alive and kicking, producing smartphones and throwing them out in the wild but it’s hardly noticeable for anyone using one of its phones nowadays except for the NEC Medias W which made a show off during the Mobile World Congress 2013. The Terrain could come with a 3.5-inch or higher display but the AT&T logo has wasted some space intended for the real estate screen. There’s also the possibility this handset will include some rugged features as seen from its design.

There’s no additional info accompanying the leaked photo with regards to spec and release date. As of now, it’s the front facing QWERTY keyboard and the “Dadphone” written all over that makes the phone “exciting” and “surprising” as it challenges the very existence of BlackBerry. We expect Ma Bell to make the official announcement sooner or later.
