Epic Games showed off a demo video called “Infiltrator” during the recently concluded Game Developers Conference and gave people a glimpse of what the future of gaming would look like. The short video runs on Epic’s new Unreal Engine 4 and looks pretty impressive. Several people who saw the demo even wondered if it was a preview of a real game that’s being developed by Epic. After all, the company is behind some of the world’s top games like Gears of War, Infinity Blade and the Mass Effect franchise.
However, fans of the Wii U who’re hoping that the new game engine will reach their beloved console will be disappointed to know that the Unreal Engine 4 won’t run on Nintendo’s newest console. According to Mark Rein, Epic’s vice president, Unreal Engine 4 is aimed at next-generation consoles and mentioned that the game engine’s previous incarnation, the Unreal Engine 3, is already behind the best games on Wii.
It makes sense that Epic has chosen to limit the number of games it’s developing. For one thing, the practice allows the company to pour its creativity and focus on making the games it’s involved in among the best. But the most important reason is that the company’s game engine licensees earn it more money than any of the games it develops. In short, the more game platforms Unreal Engines go on, the richer Epic becomes.
