I love my MacBook Pro, the portability is great, but I hate the tangle of wires I have to deal with when I’m using it on my desk at home with my monitor, FireWire, network, USB, and speaker cables. ZenDock, a new Kickstarter project has come up with a way to keep your desktop clear of clutter, and making it easier than ever to efficiently and neatly dock your MacBook Pro when using it on your desktop.

From the ZenDock Kickstarter page:

ZenDock has been in development for just over a year. Around four months ago we tested the concept and received an overwhelming response. We set out to build ZenDock with two design principles in mind – First was to build an elegant solution that would seamlessly integrate with your MacBook and second was to build a device that just works, yet doesn’t get in your way.

The idea of the ZenDock is simple, you plug one end into your MacBook Pro or Retina display MacBook Pro, and at the other end of a cable is the place you plug in all your cables. So, all you have on your desktop is a neat dock interface plugged into your MacBook, while the other, messy end is hidden behind your desk where no one can see it.

The ZenDock folks designed their new product to use already proven electronics. “We started out by purchasing every USB 3.0 hub and sound adapter we could find, and tested each one first hand. Once we finally found electronics that we were happy with, we went to those companies directly and negotiated large quantity and custom purchase arrangements.” says the site.

For main cable production, they researched dozens of custom cable manufacturers to find just the right manufacturers for their cable components. They also searched high and low for the perfect fabricator for their CNC milled enclosures.

From what we can see, the ZenDock looks like just what the average MacBook user needs. It’s a simple, yet ingenious way to reduce the clutter on your work desk, and lord knows we can all do with our desktop clutter being reduced a bit.

I can’t wait to see the finished product, and here’s hoping we can get out hands on one to try it out.

New Macbook 2013 With Faster WiFi Leaked By Developers

Apple is expected to release new MacBook laptops this year. But before that happens, Apple fanboys would be excited to know that Cupertino might upgrade its future Mac devices particularly in the Wifi department. An interesting piece of code was found inside the second beta version of the upcoming OS update (OS X 10.8.4 Mountain Lion) when it was released to developers. The leaked code suggests that future Mac devices could use a faster 802.11ac WiFi protocol.

As one can see from the image above, the code wasn’t present from the current OS X 10.8.3. The 802.11ac protocol is significantly faster and extends the range of wireless signals than the present 802.11n. The company is said to work with chipmaker Broadcom to provide the chips to its Mac devices. The upgraded speed allows a faster downloading of contents and synchronization of files while causing connected devices to reduce their power modes for a rational power consumption.

In addition, the future availability of 802.11ac can trigger development of devices and AirPort routers compatible with it to further enhance the built-in WiFi connectivity of the Mac lines especially those coming out in the wild within the year, including MacBooks.

While it is exciting to hear the new WiFi protocol being introduced in future Apple products we should take note that it’s still not being implemented on several devices. Only a few routers were seen to use the wireless standard so it might be safe to say that the upgrade won’t be immediately installed on this year’s products.

Review: ColcaSac Jack Bauer MacBook Shoulder Bag

When looking for a shoulder bag for my Macbook Pro, I always make sure to look for certain features within the bag such as simplicity, minimalism, durability, room, or number of pockets. There are a lot of bags, which are pretty similar that don’t stand out from one another. Certain bags, such as those from Chrome or Hex are alright, but they really don’t offer anything unique or out of the ordinary.

In a sea of shoulder bags that are fairly identical, something different is quite refreshing. The Jack Bauer Macbook shoulder bag from ColcaSac offers just that; a small but spacious bag to fit your Macbook, gear, accessories, books, and more.

Overview

ColcaSac is well known for implementing a soft interior fleece within all their sleeves and shoulder bags to assure all your products and devices are kept well intact from any scratches or dents. The Jack Bauer Macbook shoulder bag is no exception. The dimensions of the bag are 11.5 in height, 15.5 in width, and a 5-inch depth. This helps keep your Macbook properly in place from getting knocked around, but at the same time, it still leaves just enough room if you choose to put it in a sleeve first.

I’ve been carrying around my Macbook both ways and I feel comfortable just putting it in the bag without a sleeve because there’s so much protection within the bag. The bag is made from hemp canvas exterior lining, so it’s very strong. Even with added use over time, it doesn’t feel as if it would rip or tear. I know this is the case, because I’ve used the Macbook sleeves, which last a long time with no sign of wear.

Of course, it doesn’t weigh as much as a leather bag, so it’s really light, but at the same time it has some added durability to protect your belongings. There are also deep exterior pockets on either side of the bag, which can hold a lot. There isn’t any kind of velcro or a zipper on it, but that’s what makes the bag so simplistic.

Anything I’ve put in these pockets hasn’t dropped out or moved around. It stays in place without any worry. The main compartment is fairly large and can hold a Macbook and a few books or a second Macbook without a sleeve. There is also a small zipper pocket within the main compartment, which can fit a mouse, some USBs, or a charger, even though that might be a tight fit, which I noticed when I forced it in there. On the opposite side are two smaller pockets that are great for smaller items, but I just store my business cards in there and a USB cable in the other pocket.

If you lift the main flap, the outside of the Jack Bauer shoulder bag contains a larger zipper pocket. This can easily fit a notebook or sketchpad and some pens, although I was able to put my iPad inside. To me, it’s the perfect size to hold an iPad. It barely fits, so it’s staying in place and at the same time not hitting against your Macbook or a charger in the main pocket. Even with a smart cover and a charger, I was able to store the iPad just fine.

Overall

The Jack Bauer Macbook shoulder bag is most definitely one of the best bags I’ve ever used. It’s so simplistic, but stands out from the crowd of average shoulder bags. It’s not bulky, but still holds so much, being just the perfect size. The adjustable strap stays comfortably around your shoulder with having any worry of it falling off.

When I first saw the strap in person, I thought it was too big and maybe it could have been a more thinner, but when you’re carrying the bag, it doesn’t get in the way at all. ColcaSac adds to their great lineup of sleeves and bags with the Jack Bauer Macbook shoulder bag, one of the more durable and great-looking bags for your Macbook.

Retina MacBook Pro Battery Life Increases 20+ Minutes With OS X 10.8.3

As a refreshing change of pace, we have news of an Apple update actually ADDING battery life to one of their devices. The Mac Observer has performed extensive tests on the final build of the recent OS X 10.8.3 update and has found that it adds 20+ minutes of battery life for Retina display MacBook users.

The Mac Observer:

We decided to also run tests on our 2012 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (rMBP). We privately tested each beta build of 10.8.3 on both MacBooks as they were released and, starting with build 12D76, we saw a noticeable jump in battery life on the rMBP. Running time went from 398 minutes, which was roughly the same as the public release of 10.8.2, to 421 minutes, a change that persisted with the final build.

Other MacBook models, such as an 2011 MacBook Pro, and a 2011 13-inch MacBook Air didn’t show a similar increase, so the joy seems to be restricted to those lucky owners of Retina display MacBook Pros.

Sure, 23 minutes might not seem like a big deal, but it could be just enough juice for you to get a project finished while away from an AC outlet. Or yes, more than enough extra power to post numerous tweets about your MBPro’s longer battery life.

More details are available at The Mac Observer website.
