Google announced huge changes for Google Maps at their Google I/O keynote today, revealing a completely redesigned web version of the service for desktop, complete with improvements to rerouting in transit, Google Earth integration without additional plugins, and more. The new web platform also features public transit information, a new schedule view, and more.

In particular, the new 3D mapping features look pretty incredible – and I can’t wait to try them out. More exciting, however, is that they also announced a new, revamped version of Maps for iPhone and Android, as well as Google Maps for iPad, which will be launched sometime this summer.

The new desktop version is rolling out soon, and Google has launched a preview page for users to enter their email address to request early access. More details are available at TheNextWeb and The Verge, as well as on Google’s Preview page. Check out the below video to see the new Google Maps for desktop in action!

Square Stand For iPad Makes It The Perfect Cash Register

Business owners can now take advantage of the iPad and run their establishments easier with the integration of Square Stand.

The product works like a point-of-service infrastructure for a store by turning an iPad, versions 2 or 3, into a cash register machine with its own card reader and payment system or software.  It accepts cash or utilizes a card payment system. Options that can be purchased separately and connected with Square Stand include Square register that prints receipts, a cash register for storage and a bar scanner.

Checkouts can be configured to add buyer’s names, photos or order modifiers for quick internal storage and future retrieval. Card cost is 2.75% per swipe with no additional fees and payments made online are automatically deposited to online bank accounts. A user can even check historical sales or access real-time sales data through its powerful analytics. It’s the best alternative to bigger and costlier POS systems out there and offers small business owners something to work with cash receipts and payments systems without having to choose between a manual accounting or a bigger POS system.

Square Stand will be available beginning July 8 but is now on pre-order basis for $ 299 apiece. However, some local merchants (US) will start using Square Stand beginning May 15. More than $ 15 billion in payments are processed by Square Stand annually and the number excludes the figures from Starbucks, which has partnered with Square regarding the Square Wallet service offered to the customers of the coffee-maker. The video below will demo how it works.

Heart Stopping News: Science Fair Project Shows iPad Magnets Can Shut Down Pacemakers

Pacemaker patients! Do you use your iPad, and then doze off with the iPad on your chest? YOU COULD BE COMMITTING SUICIDE! There, was that scary enough? But seriously, a science fair project by a 14 year old has discovered that the tiny magnets inside the iPad can shut down implanted defibrillators if the device is left lying on a pacemaker user’s chest.

MacRumors:

Apple builds magnets into every iPad it sells for use with its Smart Cover accessory.

Gianna Chien made the discovery as part of a science fair project that didn’t win first place, but she will be presenting her findings to 8,000 doctors at a meeting of the Heart Rhythm Society in Denver, reports Bloomberg.

John Day, head of heart-rhythm services at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah says the research offers a valuable warning for people with implanted defibrillators. The devices deliver an electric shock to restart a stopped heart.

If a person falls asleep with the iPad 2 on the chest, the magnets in the cover can “accidentally turn off” the heart device, said Chien, a high school freshman in Stockton, California, whose father is a doctor. “I definitely think people should be aware. That’s why I’m presenting the study.”

Implanted defibrillators can be turned off by magnets as an added safety measure. The magnets in the iPad are too small to affect implanted defibrillators in normal use but the device can affect them if it is held close enough to the users chest.

Chien found that 30% of patients with defibrillators who put iPads on their chest were affected by the device. While most defibrillators will turn themselves back on after the magnet is removed, some need to be reactivated manually.

Jim Dalrymple Launches The Loop Magazine for iPhone and iPad

Noted Apple journalist Jim Dalrymple, a 20-year veteran of the Apple news scene, and founder of the website The Loop, has launched a new iOS magazine through Apple’s Newsstand. The app takes inspiration from Marco Arment’s The Magazine app, and will serve as an extension of the site’s content, including long-form articles on technology, music, games, and more.

Here are a few of Dalrymple’s thoughts in regards to launching the magazine:

For many years people have been asking me why I didn’t release an app for the iPhone and iPad. The answer was simple: I couldn’t find anything that added value to what I did on The Loop. I wanted something more than a side-scrolling news app that basically imitated what I’d already linked to or written on the Web site. [...]

It wasn’t until I saw the format that Marco Arment used in The Magazine that I realized what I really wanted for The Loop — a design and reading experience that matched what I had on the Web site. An easy to read magazine that focused on original content, not on selling ads.

The idea here is content and quality over page views and ads – you know, the way journalism should work. Subscriptions to the magazine cost $ 2 per month for 2 bi-weekly issues, with a 7-day free trial. I’m a huge fan of The Loop, and have the utmost respect for Jim Dalrymple and his team. I’ve already subscribed, and look forward to some fantastic content. I encourage you to do the same!

To learn more, check out Jim Dalrymple’s announcement post, as well as exclusive interviews with Dalrymple at both MacStories and TheNextWeb (TNW also provides additional details aside from the interview).

The app is available now for free from the App Store
