How to Transfer a Time Machine Backup To a New Hard Drive

As someone who has used Apple’s Time Machine backup feature (along with CarbonCopyCloner) for many years, I’ve grown to trust and rely on the feature as an important part of my backup regimen. I’ve also learned, however, that it is all but inevitable that at some point, you will run out of space on your backup drive and/or decide to move to a faster, smaller, or better backup drive. When that time comes (and believe me, it will), you may find yourself wondering how to transfer your Time Machine backups to a new drive.

The process isn’t quite as straightforward as transferring most types of files – but fortunately, Apple has provided detailed instructions on how to get the job done! Although it does take several steps and a fair bit of time, transferring your Time Machine backups is a fairly simple process.

Here’s how it’s done (via Apple’s support article):

To have the existing Time Machine backups on the new backup drive, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the new backup drive to your Mac.

  2. Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder).

  3. In Disk Utility, select the new drive’s icon, then make sure it has a GUID partition, and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which you can check on the “Format:” line at the bottom of the window.

  4. If it is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article
    Note:
Back up any important data on the drive before you format it.

  5. Open a new Finder window. In the Finder sidebar, click the icon of the new backup drive and choose Get Info from the File menu or press Command-I (⌘-I)

  6. Make sure “Ignore ownership on this volume” at the bottom of the “Sharing & Permissions:” section is not checked.

  7. Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences. Choose Time Machine > Open Time Machine Preferences…

  8. Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.

  9. Open a new Finder window. In the Finder sidebar, click the icon of the current backup drive.

  10. Open a new Finder window. In the Finder sidebar, click the icon of the new backup drive.

  11. Drag the folder “Backups.backupdb” on the current backup drive to the root level of the new backup drive. Note: If the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended but without journaling, OS X may state that “the volume has the wrong case sensitivity” to be used as a back up disk.

  12. Enter an administrator name and password, then click OK to start the copying process.  This may take some time to complete because all the backups will be copied.

  13. After the copy has completed, open Time Machine preferences and click “Select Disk…”.

  14. Select the new backup drive, then click “Use Backup Disk”.

That’s all there is too it! Good luck – and as always, make sure to keep your Mac backed up at all times to avoid data loss!

Seagate 4TB Hard Drive Now Official With Cheaper Price

These days, 4TB hard drives and 1TB disk platters are nothing new but a 4TB hard drive that utilizes only 4 platters is. And this is what renowned hard drive company Seagate can give its customers. The company recently announced that it’s ready to ship its 3.5” 4TB Desktop HDD internal hard drive. While it might not be the first to come up with the 4TB hard drive, what sets its product apart is that it has come up with a design that uses 1TB per disk. In short, Seagate’s 4TB Desktop HDD comes with four disks of 1TB storage space each.

Seagate’s 4TB Desktop HDD internal hard drive boasts of a 64MB of cache memory that works with latest SATA 3 standard as well as other SATA versions. The new Desktop HDD is also more energy efficient. It spins at around 5,900rpm so the energy it uses is 35% less. But that doesn’t mean that the company has sacrificed speed, the new drive still performs amazingly fast and can sustain writing speeds of around 145mbps.

The 4TB Desktop HDD was developed with desktop PCs and external storage solutions in mind. For unassuming amateurs like me, the 4TB hard drive is capable of handling around 500 hours of HD video, 800,000 photos and about a million songs.

Seagate’s 4TB Desktop HDD is currently out in the market and will push you back about $ 190 for the simple drive and $ 212 for one with an external casing. Still, it’s a good deal considering what you get for that much power.

iPhone 6 Release Delayed Until 2014, 4.8-inch Display Hard To Manufacture?

Loyal customers who flaunt the Apple brand are likely to follow what the company is planning after the successful release of iPhone 5. Apple apparently had the intent to release the 4.8-inch iPhone 6 however it had to put its plans to a halt because of some problems.

The impediment that is stopping Apple from its plan focuses on the manufacturing aspect. To be more specific, Apple’s screen suppliers are having a hard time to increase the size from 4-inches to a larger 4.8-inch. It may be noted that the iPhone uses the so-called in-cell technology which basically joins the touch screen and glass screen into one display. This is where the company’s suppliers are faced with problems as they cannot get enough yields so to speak. According to Peter Misek, a Jefferies Analyst, Apple may be releasing a low-cost iPhone as well as the iPhone 5S which is a revamped iteration of the iPhone 5 prior to the iPhone 6 becoming a reality.

Apart from the screen difficulties, another factor which may be holding Apple for the iPhone 6 release is the maturity of the operating system (OS) which is iOS itself. Misek believes that Apple’s next iPhone will be powered by a 20 nm processor which should be complemented by an upgraded iOS to maximize the speed. The new iOS may not be there yet up until 2014.

I remember my first portable hard drive. I purchased it nearly a decade ago, and was astonished at the HUGE 120GB of storage it came with – at the time it was one of the largest portable drives in existence. Sadly, I also remember its fate: I dropped it. I picked it up, and it died in my arms. What a waste of technology.

We really like you guys, and I never want you to have to go through the pain, grieving, loss, and years of therapy I had to go through for cutting short the life of a young drive that was still in its prime. That’s why we’ve teamed up with ioSafe to give away what might be the most durable and difficult-to-kill portable hard drives ever made: The ioSafe Rugged!

The ioSafe Rugged is no ordinary USB drive. It is built to handle extreme abuse, whether it be impact, submersion in water, extreme temperatures, or even theft! If Rambo were into hard drives and such, this would be his drive. It can even withstand a bullet! Here’s what ioSafe has to say about it:

The ultimate portable hard drive backed by the ultimate warranty

Data has become increasingly mobile, but with that increased mobility comes increased risk. Delicate portable storage devices can easily be dropped during travel, stolen or exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, sand or moisture — all factors which can lead to data loss. The ioSafe Rugged Portable addresses each of these problems.

It’s tough enough to be used in arctic or desert environments, is shock and crush resistant, has anti-theft features and is backed by ioSafe’s unique Data Recovery Service and No-Hassle Warranty.

And here are some of the highlights of just how well it protects your data:
