TechCrunch:

For over a year, whispers from GigaOmDroid Life  and others signaled Google would undertake a big unification of its fragmented messaging offering. Today Google will offer new free iOS and Android Hangout apps, the Google+ integration, and you can upgrade from Google Talk to Hangouts by clicking on your photo in the Gmail chat list. There are currently no plans for other platforms like Windows Phone or Blackberry.

Presence, or knowing when friends are available to chat, is a big focus of Hangouts. You can tell when friends are on Hangouts, if they’re currently typing a message, and if they’ve read your messages. You can select specific friends or a whole group to start a chat with via Google+ Circles.

Hangouts will deliver your messages to the web interface or mobile app your friends are using. When you’re offline, Hangouts will store any messages you receive until your return. The service won’t send you an email every time you receive a message while you’re offline, instead it will only notify you by email if someone starts a conversation with you while you’re away. Notifications won’t send duplicate notifications on different platforms, and notifications can be quieted altogether if needed.

You’ll be able to start, stop, or restart a conversation as you move between platforms, and any friends you chat with can be on iOS, Android, or the desktop.

Emojis, photos and video can be used in messages. You can select from any of 850 hand-drawn emoji images. When you send photos in Hangouts, they are saved to a Google+ album that those involved in the conversation can view, edit, or share later.

Video chat in Hangouts allows you to talk with up to 10 friends at once, with whomever is talking shown in a big window, while everyone else in the chat are shown in the tiles below. Hangouts will ring up friends when you call them, and they’ll be notified if they miss the digital meetup.

To set itself apart from services like FaceTime, Hangouts video has added features, such as visual and sound effects. The group can also can watch YouTube videos and take screenshots for later.

The app doesn’t allow sending non-Hangouts users SMS messages, so you’ll need to make sure the users you want to connect with have the Hangout app installed.

Google Integrates Hangouts to Gmail Video Chats – Chat with 9 People

Google has made integrations and has replaced the present video chat system of Gmail with a better feature from its Google+ service and is called the Hangouts. Last year, Hangouts was first integrated to Google+ which enabled users to take part in multi-party video chats. According to Google, Hangouts is a better preference than other widely used video chat services such as Skype which grants peer-to-peer technology. This is because Hangouts takes credit of Google+ in order to deliver higher quality, performance and reliability.

With this, the users will be able to communicate with a number of people up to nine participants all having Google+ accounts. Previously, the video chats of Gmail only permitted for one-to-one sessions. Additionally, the users will be able to watch YouTube videos, associate Google documents and also carry out screen sharing. The Gmail users can video chat with people outside their Gmail contacts as they can chat with people in their Google+ circles.

The users are facilitated to ‘Hangout’ from Google+ as well as Gmail through browser on devices with Android and iOS applications. This integration of the Hangout feature has come up at the correct serious time for Google because Microsoft has come up with challenges for it as it launched a refurbished version of its Hotmail email service named as Outlook.com. This new come up from Microsoft also has also brought the interaction and association of its online products such as Office 365, Skydrive and Skype.

Another improvement is that Gmail video chat sessions will no longer be limited to computer browsers but rather be possible as well on Android and iPhone tablets and smartphones. Google is likely to unveil the new Hangouts video chat in Gmail slowly in the upcoming weeks. This will start with Google Accounts and then move on to the cloud services called Google Apps and e-mail suites. You can install the Hangouts Plugin.

[Updated] New Google+ App with Hangouts & Fresh Look

It’s been just a year when Google+ was launched and the growing social network has got a number of users till now. even thought Google+ and Facebook share some similarities but in reality Google+ is like a long-form of Twitter rather than being a Facebook competitor.

Majority of people access Google+ not just to share stuff with their friends but to check out what the authorities in some areas that they are interested in are posting. Then the users comment on their posts, and +1 or share their posts with whoever they may have added to their circles. The best thing about the Google+ mobile app is the instant-upload feature. Syncing your photos with an online account like Google+ is indeed a great way.

With Google+ mobile app a user can simply click a picture and share it with others as it is instantly available online. You don’t have to connect your smartphone to the PC, then copy pics on to the PC, and upload them to the web. However the option of sharing is entirely up to the user. User doesn’t have to worry about the pictures falling in the wrong hands as they are by default private.

Google+ app for Android has been updated with an enhanced and more beautiful browsing experience of the Google+ posts that is now heavily based on images. The new latest version that rolled out also includes some interesting features such as:

  • Visual refresh of the stream and improved navigation
  • Initiate a Hangout from Main menu
  • Support for ringing hangout notification
  • Support for post editing
  • Messenger suggestions for people you may know
  • Download photos from posts or Messenger conversation

The Hangouts feature is the most interesting new feature and it makes more sense to have it now when more people have moved to LTE data plans. The app is graphics-intensive and requires a lot of processing power to render and load thus the new app might not be very fast in low-end smartphones. Also it is recommended to stick with Wi-Fi since the video streams will consume all the data cap pretty fast.

You can download the updated Google + app from the Google Play Store for free. The current version and device requirements vary as per the device. Try out the new Google+ app and let us know your feedbacks.
