At its I/O keynote earlier this month, Google unveiled its new conversational, Google Now-like voice search for the desktop. The new feature would allow Chrome users to drill down into searches and their results by using only their voice. Today Google has finally started rolling out the feature for Chrome users.

After updating to the latest version 27.0.1453.93 of Chrome, users can navigate to Google.com, click the microphone icon, and choose to allow the new Google Voice search feature to begin listening. Google will only ask for permission to listen once and from then on users can simply speak in order to search. For certain search results such as questions Google will also provide audible results.

It appears not quite all of the functionality is available. During the demo, Google executives were activating the feature by simply saying, “OK, Google,” and then were able to do a hands-free search from the search results page. Currently, the release version requires the user to click the mic icon to start a voice search.

The leaked info from an insider isn’t completely detailed though and what’s been confirmed is only the testing phase. There is no assurance about copying S4 camera features to the S III and whether Android 4.3 or 4.22 will be used in the process. However, the final form of the OS will be announced in June yet, and there are some warnings regarding the tested Android such as the increase in binary counter, absence of modem and its nature as repackaged from dump files.

Flashing instructions after downloading include unzipping the file, opening Oden 3.04, restarting the phone in download mode and connecting it, adding the files, flashing then rebooting to complete the cycle. The test proves to be successful though and the firmware is working perfectly. Finally, the leaked build is intended only for GS III i9300 or the international model.

Google Maps 2013 Gets Redesigned With New Features

Google unveiled its redesigned Google Maps at the on-going I/O 2013 conference.  The rebuilt emanates from “the ground up” with clouds hovering in real-time and Earth seen with in Milky Way when sun sets obviously highlighting a stunning imagery coupled with photos that are user-generated. The Google Maps 2013 presents a “significant overhaul since it was launched back in 2005″.

The integration of Google Earth and Street View is also featured, along with the incorporation of restaurant reviews and Zagat badges. Other listed new features include the ability to make smart recommendations, deals for customers at Starbucks, the appearance of an information card, and a GPS-style directions re-routing scheme that is traffic-based. As presented during the I/O event, the Maps loads quicker with a WebGL-supported browser such as Chrome and Firefox.

During the developers conference, attendees were given the chance to try the new Google Maps for desktop. One thing you would notice was the use of vectors instead of tiles that’s similar with the mobile version of the map. A more improved search box  with instant access to Street View can be seen as well as access to recommended places and surrounding traffic. The video below would probably show more details and summarize the list of improvements done by Google.

Google+ Gets a Major Facelift With Numerous New Features

Google has announced a major facelift for its Google+ social networking site. The new interface focuses on customization, automatic photo enhancing features, Google’s Hangout video chatting service, and new features that make it easier to discover new content like conversations and new profile pages.

The Verge:

The new design bears resemblance to the rather attractive layout Google+ adopted for its iPad and Android tablet apps last June: a three column-wide grid of cards replaces the long list of posts, photos, and comments that currently makes up the Google+ Stream, and high-resolution photos and videos take up the full screen width.

Part of the new Google+ focus is on hashtags, they’ve been expanded and the service will automatically scan your updates to add relevant links. (The feature can be disabled if you don’t care for it.) The service can even scan photos that are uploaded, say photos of the Empire State Building, and tag them appropriately.

Google is also working to make uploaded photos better, with a feature called Auto Enhance that will analyze and apply tweaks to uploaded photos. While the adjustments will include simple ones, such as brightness, contrast, color correction, noise reduction, tonal distribution, and saturation, it will also make changes like blurring skin to hide imperfections like zits and wrinkles. The adjustments are non-destructive, and you can disable the feature if you prefer.

Other new photo features include “Auto Awesome,” where if Google detects a series of similar photos taken in a short burst of time, it will automatically create an automated GIF from the pics. It can even make everyone in a photo smile, which is a little creepy and Joker-ish IMHO. It can also stitch together panoramas, and create HDR photos if it sees some photos it can use.

Hangouts is also heavily integrated into the Google+ revamp, so many of the features included in the new Hangouts app for iOS and Android are included.

These and numerous other changes for Google+ will be available starting today.
