TNW:

A quick search on the Apple Support Communities forum for iOS 6.1 battery shows this is not an isolated problem. Apple released iOS 6.1 on January 28. It appears some users have been having problems ever since they’ve upgraded: complaints have been coming in from that date all the way till today.

The earliest found report was on January 28, and ironically comes form a user reporting his great battery life on his iPhone 5. The first reply however, is from another iPhone 5 user who is “Seeing the exact opposite” and the thread goes downhill from there.

Another 16 page thread began on January 29th, and a third on February 4th. All of these threads have a majority of their replies coming in today February 8th.

There is a thread that was started on January 29th that contains the closest thing yet to a solution:

I went to see the genius’ yesterday. My problem was that my usage was almost identical to my stand by times, which means that something was continuing to run in the background after closing all the apps. I was told to turn off location services and then one by one turn each in turn to see which one was causing the drain on the battery. I was impatient so just factory reset the handset which seems to have fixed the problem.

I’ll keep you all posted on how it continues.

One possible theory links the problem with Apple Mail and Microsoft Exchange. Apparently iOS 6.1 can throw up malformed meetings, which can cause a device to get into a sync loop which in turn causes excessive transaction log growth on Exchange mailbox servers. This then leads to Exchange performance issues and transaction log drives can potentially run out of disk space.

If the two are indeed related, it would explain why some users are having the problem and others aren’t. Not everyone connects their iPhone to an Exchange server. TNW says a temporary fix is available at DevCentral.

As has happened in the past, it’s very likely that these issues will be fixed in a future update.

How about our readers? Have any of you noticed overheating or a decrease in battery life since updating to iOS 6.1? Please share your experiences, good or bad, in the comments section below.

iOS 6 Battery Drain Problems For Some Users, Fix Still Pending

Battery life has always been a consistent complaint among iOS device owners ever since the iOS 5 was released. The newest release, iOS 6, is not spared from the issue with a terrible new maps interface as an additional concern.

Based on a survey conducted in March, 92% of the consumers said that battery life in iOS 5.1 became significantly worse than in iOS 5.0. Apple has already been flooded with complaints since October 2011. With the release of the new iOS 6, it is already understood that new releases are usually coupled with overlooked glitch or bug. It is therefore expected that Apple should know better how to deal with this haunting issue.

To be specific, several iOS 6 users have claimed issues on battery drain with their device such as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. They have noticed how the battery depletes more quickly which is incongruent to Apple’s specifications.

Though there’s no proof that the battery issue exists in every user, there has been numerous reports of battery drain problems after users have made an iOS update. Users are then advised to try solving the issue by following some steps. These include completely draining the battery then charging it fully, restarting the device, adjusting the device settings, resetting the device, and disabling Siri when applicable.

New iPhone 5 May Drain Battery Fast, Disappointment In Tow

Everyone is so excited to see the newest offering of Apple–the iPhone 5. And even before the unveiling of the said gadget, photos already leaked (no surprise there) on how it will look like and how a couple of the specs will be. It will have an all-new thinner enclosure, metal design, smaller dock connector, and other awesome exterior features. One thing has not changed though – its battery. The battery pack installed in iPhone 5 is said to be similar with iPhone 4/4S which could mean that the new iPhone may drain its battery life fast.

People complained that it cannot even last for one whole day without charging. This can pose quite a problem for Apple. They need to take into consideration that not everyone can have a rechargeable battery source or a plug whenever their iPhone battery is failing them already. With the rumors of LTE connectivity also spreading, the fast network connectivity will really need a stronger battery pack. This can be fixed though. Reports said that Apple tweaked dual-core system on a chip for the new iPhone and be efficient enough to run with 4G LTE.

Rumors have it that the iPhone 5 has 1440 mAh battery pack. This is slightly higher from the 1430 mAh of the iPhone 4S and the 1420 mAh of the iPhone 4. Of course this won’t be enough for the consumers. The new battery also has a slightly increased watts-per-hour measurement: 5.45 wHr from the 5.3 and 5.3 on the iPhone 4 and 4S, respectively. Another thing, the new iPhone will have a new voltage of 3.8, compared to the 3.7 on the iPhone 4 and 4S.

We just have to wait if the new advancements offered by Apple will cover or at least give a shade to the fact that its battery can easily be drained. The iPhone 5 will be released on September 5.

Just to recall, some of these issues thrown upon the smartphone include audio quality, camera quality and battery issues. According to Nokia, the latest update provided (1600.2483.8106.11500) was intended to address standby time and improve the issues raised by users in December. The good thing is that Nokia will eventually be addressing/solving both audio and camera issues courtesy of a series of updates.

As for battery, it seems to be the pestering issue especially its life/longevity. Nokia recommends the use of the original USB charger or data cable that comes with the phone as these are designed specifically for it. Nokia has also answered that everything is okay as long as the phone’s full charge capacity is more than 1000 mAh. The company also suggested not to use the Diagnostic app but instead requests users to check the battery saver which can be found under settings and then systems.

Those who are still hounded with phone issues might as well opt for an exchange of the device or have it repaired. Nokia is also open to those who still have concerns over the battery capacity of the Lumia 800.
