Apple is reportedly on track to double the amount of money that it spends lobbying politicians this year. The increase in spending comes as the iOS device maker is coming under increasing fire in Washington for alleged tax avoidance.

AppleInsider:

Apple could spend $ 4 million lobbying politicians on the Hill, twice what the company spent last year and more than 20 times the $ 180,000 it spent in 1999, according to Reuters.

Currently, U.S. corporations are holding upwards of $ 1.5 trillion in profits offshore in order to avoid the 35% corporate income tax the repatriation of the funds would cost.  Apple holds about 6.7% of that sum.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in his testimony on the Hill earlier this week that the company will not be bringing it’s foreign cash pile back to the U.S. as long as taxes remain as they are currently. The company is showing signs of putting its considerable muscle behind pushing corporate taxes downward.

“They are very, very tactical,” an unnamed former Apple lobbyist told Reuters. “They only join issues they really care about.”

Aside from taxes, Apple would most likely also lobby Congress on environmental and import issues, along with broadband and other technology issues.

While Apple doubling its lobbying to $ 4 million in 2013 may seem like a big move, its spending doesn’t even approach that of other technology firms. Four million is just about what Facebook spent on lobbying last year, however Oracle spent around 50% more than that, and Microsoft spent double that amount. The largest lobbying spender in 2012 was Apple rival Google, which spent $ 18.2 million lobbying Congress.

The Amazing Story Of An iPhone Double Theft

76644 iPhone Thief The Amazing Story Of An iPhone Double Theft

iPhones get stolen daily, however if you were to tell me that somebody got their iPhone stolen, then the thief got it stolen off him minutes later, before it being returned to the original owner, I would have trouble believing you.

Nevertheless, that’s what happened in New York to a 16 year old girl, the New York Times reports. So sit back, relax, and read this amazing story that I’m about to summarize for you.

It was a cold November day in New York, when a girl walking through Prospect Park, iPhone in hand, was plugged into music and blissfully unaware of her surroundings. Three boys then approached her, one in pink shoes (this is important, you’ll see why later). Pink shoes lunged for the iPhone in an attempted ‘snatch and run’, and after a small tug of war ran off, splitting from his two friends.

Two cops were nearby, so the girl diligently went to tell them what happened, before jumping in the patrol car and being driven round in search of the missing phone.

Meanwhile, Pink Shoes was keen to sell the phone, and found an interested party on Bedford Avenue. The potential buyer asked to see the phone, and Pink Shoes, not thinking anything of it, handed it over. Potential Buyer then ran off with it, thieving from the thief.

It could have ended there, but stupidly, Pink Shoes flagged down a police car and explained that he’d just had his iPhone stolen. Potential Buyer didn’t get far and was soon caught, and this is when our enthralling story reaches it’s climax. Both were taken to the 70th precinct station, with the girl still searching for her iPhone in the patrol car.

It was at this point that an officer with her suggested that they ring her phone. Of course, they reached the cops who’d just arrested Potential Buyer, and after some confusion, they all got together at the police station. To find out whose phone it really was, the three parties involved were asked to enter the passcode. Clearly, the girl was the only able to and she got her phone back, with the other two getting thrown into the slammer.

Story over, breathe. It’s one of those things that’s pretty unbelievable, and it’s definitely something that the girl can tell at dinner parties, and something that Pink Shoes can use to prove his stupidity. Potential Buyer meanwhile will have to learn how to run faster.

Apple is reported to have filed plans to more than double the size of its fuel cell facility at its data center in Maiden, North Carolina. The original 4.8 megawatt capacity will be increased to 10 megawatts.

Fifty fuel cells adjacent to its $ 1 billion data center in Maiden are expected to be operating by January, Apple said in papers filed with the N.C. Utilities Commission. It will be fueled by “directed biogas” in which cleaned methane gas from a landfill is injected into a natural gas pipeline.

The company says the initial 4.8 megawatt phase was brought up, and testing began in October. It applied in November to obtain an amended state permit to increase the size of the project.

Apple is using the fuel cell facility, along with two massive solar farms to attempt to achieve its goal of only using 100% renewable energy at all of its data centers. The Maiden fuel cell facility is already said to be the largest of its type in the United States that isn’t owned by a utility company.

A report by Strategy Analytics today says that the number of smartphones in use in the world today has surpassed 1 billion for the first time in the third quarter, and will double by the year 2015.

7d902 iPhone 5 Apple 1 Smartphones in Use Passes 1 Billion, Could Double by 2015Business Week:

The number reached 1.038 billion in the three-month period, a 47 percent increase from a year earlier, the Boston-based industry researcher said in a statement today. That translates into one in every seven people worldwide owning a handheld device that works like a computer, according to the statement.

Nokia introduced the first “smartphone” in 1996, but the industry’s expansion rapidly increased with the introduction of Apple’s popular iPhone, the report says. Researchers say it will probably take less than three years for the number to double in size.

Neil Mawston, London-based executive director at Strategy Analytics, said smartphone penetration is still relatively low, and “Most of the world does not yet own a smartphone and there remains huge scope for future growth, particularly in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa.”

Bloomberg Industries estimates the growth of the market to be worth $ 219 billion last year, and has seen Apple and Samsung Electronics collect huge earnings as they take sales from rivals such as Nokia.

Last month saw Apple selling more than 5 million iPhone 5s in the handsets debut weekend, handily breaking the record set by the previous model, the iPhone 4S.

Samsung ended Nokia’s string of 14 years at the top of the smartphone market this year, according to Strategy Analytics.
