Lightpack Adds Backlight To Your Display Like A Pro (Kickstarter)

The Lightpack is a device that provides an innovative way of bringing the wonders of Ambilight to any Linux, OS X or Windows device with a screen. What is needed is to attach the device and its 10 LED modules and install the accompanying software and it’ll be good to go. Despite the proliferation of Ambilight technology in current dispensation, no one has yet provided a simpler scheme that eliminates the need for Arduino-wrangling and more soldering until now, thanks to the efforts of Woodenshark.

The good thing about this device is that it can control lighting through a mobile gadget such as a tablet or smartphone, or provide alerts for email volumes or a unit’s (CPU) temperature. The project is open-source and publications of layouts and BOM are made under a GPL license while software source codes are also disclosed in the wild. The device reduces or eliminates the lighting differences between scenes that are dark and bright thus levelling the room’s light intensity and reducing the tension of the eye muscles of viewers.

Lightpack uses colors from video and games and sets custom color capturing area as well as the color balance for each of the LED used. The box containing the PCB, LED driver ICs and other electronic parts is mountable at the back of a TV, laptop or PC screen, and cables are then used to connect it to the 10-LED sets. A power supply and a microUSB are provided for power and connectivity needs particularly on smartphones or tablets. Basically, it is a plug-n-play device. It takes less than 10-15 minutes to install the device and it comes with the Prismatick software which takes the place of a device driver.

Woodenshark’s Lightpack is on its way to reaching the goal of  $ 261,962 by May 31, currently at $ 157,442 with 2,446 backers and 35 days left in a Kickstarter campaign intended to mass produce the device, offer it cheap and get all the certifications needed for quality and marketability. The team is seeking funding to reduce the price to $ 90 apiece and lowering it further to $ 60 for qualified pledgers.
