T-Mobile reports that it added 202,000 prepaid customers last quarter, which aided in offsetting the 199,000 subscribers it lost. It also reported sales of 500,000 iPhones, which has to make the magenta carrier feel a little more optimistic about its future.

GigaOM:

The company announced subscriber numbers on Wednesday, in conjunction with its quarterly earnings. Although the branded net customer additions numbered only 3,000, it was the first time that figure was positive since the first quarter of 2009. Customers on the network only tell half the story though: Measuring monetization of customers through ARPU, or average revenue per user, is just as important.

ARPU dropped 6.3% year-over-year to $ 54.07 for postpaid subscribers, as the company saw 36% of its customer base switch to either a Vlue or SImple Choice plan. Prepaid customers helped T-Mobiles cause as ARPU for that group rose 11.3% to $ 28.25.

iPhone sales aren’t helping the bottom line as much as T-Mobile would probably have hoped, as the company’s $ 107 million net income in Q1 2013 was a significant drop from the $ 200 million it posted a year ago.

T-Mobile also reported $ 1.1 billion in capital expenditures for the quarter, investing heavily in network modernization. By the end of 2013, T-Mobile expects to bathe up to 200 million possible subscribers in magenta with its new LTE network.

Apple’s “Strict Conditions” Keeping the iPhone From 2.8 Billion Customers

A new analysis says “prohibitive” carrier requirements by Apple have prevented some 2.8 billion customers from having access to the iPhone.

AppleInsider:

The estimate comes from Horace Dediu of Asymco, who spoke with Bloomberg about Apple’s untapped market potential. Among the biggest partners Apple has yet to strike a deal with are China Mobile, the largest carrier in the world, and NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile provider.

Apple’s chief rival Samsung has deals in place with almost all of the 800 carriers worldwide, says Dediu. He says Apple has “run out” of carriers that will agree to its conditions for carrying the iPhone.

One requirement the Cupertino company imposes on carriers that agree to carry its popular iPhone is sales quotas. These can prove costly for carriers, especially those who don’t have a large number of subscribers that use costly data plans.

A deal between Apple and China Mobile has been anticipated for years, but the ink has not been applied to the paper as of yet, keeping the iPhone unavailable to the network that has 715 million subscribers.

By Dediu’s estimate, there are 2.8 billion customers not currently served by Apple’s existing iPhone lineup. Figures such as this help fuel the constant rumors that the company is working on a low-cost iPhone to appeal to customers who don’t buy their handsets via contract subsidies.

Verizon Customers: Get Ready to Wait the Full Two Years for That Phone Upgrade

Verizon Wireless announced some changes on Friday that are sure to make their customers less than pleased. The carrier had been letting customers that were on a two year contract upgrade to a new, subsidized device after 20 months. However, starting with those whose contracts expire next January, customers will have to wait the full 24 months.

AllThingsD:

Customers will also be able to share an eligible upgrade with another person on their account. However, as of April 15, Verizon won’t let you transfer an upgrade from a hotspot, tablet or other non-phone device. Also, Verizon is not letting customers use expired credits from its discontinued “New Every Two” program.

The carrier does helpfully note that they’ll be glad to upgrade any customers willing to pay the full, unsubsidized price of a new phone at any time.

Verizon’s main competitor, AT&T, does allow customers to upgrade after 20 months, they do however allow an “early upgrade” with a larger initial payment. Sprint also offers upgrades after 20 months.

Verizon’s moves today should lengthen times between upgrades for their customers, and of course boost profit margins.

T-Mobile, bucking the trends in the industry, recently rolled out its new “uncarrier” plans, which allow customers to buy an iPhone 5 for $ 100 down plus 24 monthly payments of $ 20. While magenta network customers can buy a new phone at any time, they will still be responsible for the monthly payments on their prior phone purchases.

T-Mobile USA is sort of trying to rebrand itself at the moment. It has secured the iPhone, and had a pretty big media event last week to celebrate, where it also announced new deals and contracts for customers.

Virgin Mobile is not standing idly by though. It has already launched a counter attack, with an ad campaign called ‘Retain Your Brain’. Virgin is offering T-Mobile customers $ 100 to switch over, with unlimited plans starting at $ 35 a month. It doesn’t sound like that bad a deal. Check out Virgin’s completely unbiased chart below.
