Bajarin: The Fallacies of Competing With the iPad

bde30 tim bajarin thumb Bajarin: The Fallacies of Competing With the iPad

We’ve all seen articles claiming the iPad will drop below 50% market share as early as next year. But Ben Bajarin, writing for Tech.pinions, examines a few flaws he says he sees in how Apple’s competitors think when they’re trying to compete with the iPad.

bde30 New iPad 3 Bajarin: The Fallacies of Competing With the iPadBajarin:

I’d rather examine a few flaws in competitors thinking about how to compete with the iPad and to do that I’d like to start off by making a point. I genuinely believe that it is possible to compete with the iPad. I don’t think it’s easy. I don’t think many companies can; but I don’t think it is impossible.

Bajarin lists a number of critical mistakes performed by Apple’s competitors, which show three main fallacies:

Fallacy number 1: Companies don’t realize that there is always room to innovate. Companies that are attempting to create an iPad competitor don’t understand touch computing. Simply slapping a touch screen on a piece of hardware will not allow a device to hit the market and be instantly competitive. Touch based computing requires a touch based ecosystem.

Bajarin believes Android is a weak touch ecosystem, mainly because it’s an advertising strategy for Google, not a software strategy. He says time will tell whether Windows 8 will be successful as a touch ecosystem. It requires hardware manufacturers and software developers to understand touch computing. Time will tell.

Fallacy number 2: That the number of designs in a market on a particular platform is a competitive advantage. The number of designs alone is not an advantage in itself. It can be quite the opposite. Bajarin says that too much choice or too much variation in choice can overwhelm the purchaser to the point of frustration and lead to the inability to make a decision. Too many products on a particular platform and consumers may find the decision making process painful and confusing.

Fallacy number 3: Low cost always wins. Bajarin says, “I don’t believe that today’s consumers in mature markets want things that are cheap. I believe they want things that are valuable to them at a personal level.” Understanding the market dynamics for tablets is what he thinks is largely being missed by those desiring to create competitive tablets.

Bajarin’s article ends with the one question he believes any company who is creating a tablet to compete with the iPad should ask themselves about the device they are developing: “What will my tablet do better than the iPad?” And what can they do with it that they can’t do with an iPad? If there isn’t a good answer to this question, then they need to go back to the drawing board and start over.

Apple’s iPhone 4S has been extremely popular ever since it launched – and that popularity hasn’t waned. In fact, according to AllThingsD, citing research from Canaccord Genuity, the iPhone 4S is running circles around the competition, outselling all other smartphones combined at Sprint and AT&T, and remaining the most popular smartphone at Verizon.

“Our March checks indicated the iPhone continues to extend its market share gains,” Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley writes in a note to clients today. “In fact, we believe iPhones are outselling all other smartphones combined at Sprint and AT&T and selling at roughly equal volume to all Android smartphones at Verizon.”

While the 4S isn’t outselling all competing models at Verizon, it is at least roughly meeting the number of sales for all competing devices combined – an impressive feat for a smartphone that is already nearly six months old.

DICE Didn’t Rush Battlefield 3 For The Sake Of Competing With MW3

Its Tuesday, and it’s boring. Thankfully, we received some interesting news for Battlefield 3 along with DICE’s big update. Now, in case you’re wondering why devs reveal humongous patch like these considering the game should’ve been completed since its debut, there’s a chatter on reddit which made one of BF3’s developer speak up, to defend the game from these so-called “critiques”.

battlefield 3 vs modern warfare 3 DICE Didn’t Rush Battlefield 3 For The Sake Of Competing With MW3

If you’ll read the original post, you can’t really connect the dots on how it end up to people criticizing DICE calling Battlefield 3 as a “rushed project” just to be “compete with Modern Warfare 3”.

Well, this is the part where Demize99 (real name Alan Kertz – DICE’s gameplay designer), stood out and replied this statement.

“10+ Million Sold. 89% Metacritic on PC. I’m proud of what we accomplished, I’m sorry you think it was rushed, but everything else points to two words: Great Success. The reality of development is that sacrifices must be made. And making cuts improves the over all experience for players.”

When asked why DICE’s development strategy seems to be about “rushing” and “cutting” corners just for the sake of quick profits. Kertz replied

“Again, making cuts and focusing on what’s really important improves the experience. Too many designers allow themselves to do a game “when it’s done” and as you can see, there’s really only about 2 studios that can Afford to do that, and routinely to get Quality out of it: Blizzard and Valve.”

I guess this is what you get when you argue with someone from reddit. Still, Alan provided some valid points and showed us a bit of enlightenment, why they released BF3 on 2011. And to tell you the truth, a game being developed for more than four years doesn’t sound like a “rush” to me. Want to compare it with CoD? I know, let’s not get into that again.
