New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is calling on Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and Motorola Mobility to work with his office to curb smartphone thefts. Schneiderman sent a letter to each, criticizing the companies for potentially failing to meet security promises that he says they make to consumers.

The Verge:

He believes that each of the five have overly emphasized data security to the detriment of device security, and suggested that the companies ought to be able to develop technology that would make a stolen device inoperable, and therefore of minimal use on the black market.

Smartphone theft is of increasing concern in New York City, which last year saw its first increase in crime over the last two decades, mainly due to a massive increase in iPhones being stolen.

Schneiderman’s letters to the companies suggested that their efforts to curb theft have been paltry, saying: ”I would be especially concerned if device theft accrues to your financial benefit through increased sales of replacement devices.” The letters request that each of the four companies brief his office on its current antitheft efforts, as well as offer help to his office in finding and developing solutions to the rising crime issue.

Schneiderman has also enlisted the help of Lookout, a developer of security software for Android devices. The Attorney General wrote that the company’s knowledge of mobile security will be of use to his office. It is unclear what role they will play.

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile already share serial numbers of stolen phones and refuse to activate any that show up in their databases. However, the registry of numbers does not extend to carriers outside of the U.S., which allows stolen phones to retain their value overseas. While Apple and Microsoft both offer tools to locate, lock, and wipe their devices remotely, thieves may be able to disable that security before a user can get to another device to enable them. Google has yet to offer an official tool to perform such actions on their devices.

Samsung, in its continuing effort to force people to make phone calls with larger and larger devices, has announced the third-generation Galaxy Tab. The 7-inch tablet will use a 3G connection for data, and will also double as a hella huge phone.

Specifications on the Galaxy Tab 3 suggest Samsung intends to undercut the $ 329 starting price of Apple’s iPad mini, though pricing has not been announced. The Galaxy Tab 3 will mark Samsung’s second mid-sized tablet entry for 2013, following the release in April of its Galaxy Note 8.0, a stylus-enabled affair that competes more directly with the iPad mini in terms of screen size and capabilities.

The new device will feature a 7-inch display with a 1,024 by 600 pixel resolution. It will be powered by a 1.2GHz processor, and will have the option for 8 or 16 GB of internal storage. The device will have a rear-mounted 3-megapixel camera, with a 1.3-megapixel shooter on the front. It will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean installed.

Samsung highlighted the Galaxy Tab’s “easy handgrip and portability.” The device features a thinner bezel than its ancestors.

Samsung will offer a model of the Galaxy Tab 3 with 3G connectivity, which will allow the tablet to make and receive phone calls like a smartphone. 4G wireless connectivity will not be offered by the new device.

The Galaxy Tab 3 is set to be released globally in May, with a Wi-Fi only model being offered at that time, with a 3G phone call capable model following up with a June debut.

It’s a feature that’s been available in the US for some time, but at last us folk on the other side of the pond can get our hands on Facebook VoIP calling.

Now available in the UK Facebook Messenger iPhone app, it allows you to call your friends over 3G or WiFi (via Cult of Mac). If you have an unlimited plan it is extremely useful, but it doesn’t end there.

Facebook has also added voice messaging, so you can record short voice clips and insert them into your normal Facebook chat/message.

The new feature should just appear in the app automatically, so no update download is required.

Greenlight Calls Off Preferred Stock Lawsuit Against Apple

Greenlight Capital’s David Einhorn has dropped his “silly sideshow” of a lawsuit against Apple. Greenlight holds some 1.3 million shares of the Cupertino firm.

AllThingsD:

Einhorn’s Greenlight Capital on Friday withdrew the suit it brought against Apple over a proxy proposal that would have allowed shareholders to vote on eliminating preferred stock from the company charter. Last week, Apple yanked that proposal from its shareholder meeting, after a federal judge ruled it had been “impermissibly bundled” with other matters requiring shareholder consideration, and issued an injunction preliminarily blocking a vote on it.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been quoted as saying Greenlight’s suit was a “silly sideshow.”:

So, it doesn’t mean Apple won’t release preferred share. It means we need to go to common shareholders to get their approval. Frankily, I found it bizarre that we are being sued on that is something good for shareholders, but this is the position we’re in. It’s a silly side show.

A Greenlight spokesman asserted that the suit had served its purpose: “Apple removed the bundled proposal from the shareholder meeting, therefore resolving the issue.”
