12-Dollar Phone Dissected; Has MP3 and Bluetooth Inside!

Surely almost everyone can now afford to buy a mobile phone. Even kids who are still attending elementary school can already tinker with their phone’s keypad and explore its several functions. Still, the thought of discovering a phone that both functions well and costs incredulously low is something that doesn’t really happen very often. When it does, it’s bound to create mixed reactions between those who feel amused and those who feel betrayed.

If you’re from Shenzhen, China or at least planning to make it as your next travel destination, don’t forget to include the Mingtong Digital Mall in your itinerary. Reports are saying that inside the mall, you could find a mobile phone that has the ridiculous price of just 12 dollars. Though the price can be surprising, the phone’s features prove to be surprising as well. For 12 dollars, the phone gives you Bluetooth connectivity, an OLED display, a quad-band GSM, and an MP3 player.

Those who are intrigued by the phone’s cheap price had decided to scrutinize it further by tearing it down. It doesn’t matter if they forget how to assemble it again anyway as they can just easily replace it with another $ 12 worth of mobile phone. The first thing that they found out is the absence of screws. For the case to be closed, they just needed to be snapped together.

Next, the phone doesn’t have any connectors inside. Everything else is soldered directly to the phone’s board. For purposes of shipping and storage, you would just have to flip a switch in order to disconnect the battery. Moreover, you would notice that there is no secondary protection circuit surrounding the battery.

Bluetooth function is provided by the antenna which looked like a small length of wire. Other features include 32-bit 260 MHz processor, RAM of 8MB, dual-color OLED, a keypad with backlights, an edge embedded with decorative lights and two major ICs such as Vanchip VC5276 and Mediatek MT6250DA.

The latter is rumored to be selling in volume for the price of less than $ 2. The 12-dollar cellphone is totally unbranded, unlocked, and not tied to any services, carriers, or stores. Hit the comments below if you intend to get one given the opportunity.

Apple TV Update Released – Up Next and Bluetooth Keyboard Support, New Model Revealed

In addition to today’s release of iOS 6, Apple also released an update for the Apple TV. Enhancements in the 5.2 release includes direct iTunes in the Cloud streaming, Bluetooth keyboard support, Up Next support, and more.

MacRumors:

iTunes in the Cloud: Browse and play your purchased iTunes music directly from iCloud.
Bluetooth keyboard: Use your Apple Wireless Keyboard to control your Apple TV. See this article for more information.
AirPlay audio for videos: Send stereo audio from movies, TV shows, and other videos on Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs).
Stability and performance: Includes performance and stability improvements with the iTunes Store, AirPlay, Netflix, iTunes Match, and wired Ethernet connections.

Apple has released three versions of the Apple TV update, for not only the 2nd-generation (AppleTV2,1) and 3rd-generation (AppleTV3,1) boxes but also a new AppleTV3,2 box. MacRumors suggests that the number scheme shows that the “3,2″ box would be a relatively minor change. They suggest that perhaps it is for an “international box”

Update: Apple appears to be referring to the new Apple TV model with a code name of J33I, compared to the J33 code name used on the third-generation Apple TV. While we have no direct evidence, it is possible that the “I” simply refers to an international variation of the current box. Just last month, Apple launched iTunes movies in nearly four dozen new countries.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo did mention earlier this month that he believed Apple was preparing to launch an updated Apple TV during this quarter, but he expected it to be a minor upgrade. Apple has not as yet made any announcements regarding a new or updated Apple TV.

How to Check Bluetooth Signal Strength in Mac OS X

Does it seem like your Bluetooth connection is a little unreliable? Your Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or other Bluetooth connected devices aren’t working quite right? Well, allow me to share a tip from OS X Daily on how to check your Bluetooth signal strength on your Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion.

8a3fa bluetooth signal strength How to Check Bluetooth Signal Strength in Mac OS X

Checking the Bluetooth signal strength is easy-peasy, it’s just two easy steps.

  1. Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and click “Bluetooth”
  2. Press and hold the Option key to reveal signal strength for the device

Weirdly enough, just like in golf, the lower the number the better. A low connection number is a stronger connection. For example, -20 is a much stronger signal than -90, but don’t panic if you can’t get a real low signal. In the screenshot above the bluetooth enabled iPhone that was right next to a MacBook got -38.

For input devices, a weak Bluetooth signal can mean erratic and unresponsive control, for data devices, a weak signal can lead to slow trasnfer, or even an outright failure to transfer data.

One easy thing to check, the batteries in your device. Make sure they aren’t running low. If your connection strength sucks, and the batteries are running low, swap them out, you might be surprised at how much the connection will improve.

I highly recommend rechargeable batteries for use in your Bluetooth device. Apple sells a nice battery and recharger set in the Apple Store. You can also get a great deal on rechargeable or disposable batteries at your local Costco or Sam’s Club.
