Asteroid 2011 AG5 Won’t End The World, NASA Chuckles

Hurrah, no for another “end-of-the-worldish” prediction, yet.

vesta asteroid img1 Asteroid 2011 AG5 Wont End The World, NASA Chuckles

After passing the December 21, 2012 end of the world prediction, the Earth has again somehow triumphed over another Armageddon threat, as with respect to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) report.

NASA said that the possible collision of the extremely dangerous 140-meter wide asteroid 2011 AG5 with the Earth in 2040 is no longer subsisting. Earlier, the asteroid’s orbit was projected to be creating a 0.2 percent chance doomsday in the year 2040. However, the updates with regards to the asteroid’s trajectory eased the said burden.

University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (IfA) astronomers David Tholen, Richard Wainscoat and Marco Michel- through their eight-meter Gemini North telescope- found out that 2011 AG5 will not hit the earth by 890,000 kilometers (550,000 miles). This study was done at Mauna Kea, Hawaii on Oct. 20, 21 and 27 of this year.

The astronomers then submitted their findings to the NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California for verification. The further study revealed that the possibility of orbital uncertainties has gone down by a factor of 60. Indeed, the said giant space rock is clearly not hitting the planet in 2040.

The said 2040 space rock collision had hit a number of mass media headlines previously.
