Hexy Hexapod Robot Impressions, Price and Release From Kickstarter

Robots can be a fun but a very expensive hobby. In the past, hexapod robots have already fascinated die-hard robot hobbyists and have enjoyed worldwide fame. They are crab-resembling contraptions which have six legs to give them enough flexibility and terrain-manipulating capacity. The downside is the complexity involved in creating one and the lack of designing ingenuity brought by its closed and rarely updated features. Current hexapod kits sell anywhere between $ 1,000 – $ 2,000. Defying all these shackles on hobby robotics is Hexy the Hexapod, a pocket-friendly six-legged robot.

Hexy is a cute and fun little robot buddy created by Joseph Schlesinger who has dreamed of creating a cheap but serious robotics kit. The robot creation has already earned around a whopping $ 86,000 in pledges since it hit Kickstarter in May. This is beyond the original target of thirteen grand.

Hexy’s basic components are actually standard such as a collection of laser-cut acrylic, twenty servos, an ultrasonic distance enabled sensor, and a microcontroller which is Arduino-compatible. The whole assembly is light and can be easily customized, enhanced, or repaired. Moreover, the open source designs enable anyone to take the plans and create his own Hexy.

The best feature of the little hexapod is its affordability. Other “cheap-pretentious” kits would cost you around $ 700. Hexy the Hexapod has an honest-to- goodness cheap price of $ 200. With an unbeatable selling price like this, purchasing Hexy does not only mean you were able to get a good bargain. You can also help in pushing the project to reach a massive $ 200,000 worth of pledges which would fund the development of a drag-and-drop programming GUI based on miniBloq, consequently lowering down the entry barrier.

Forbes: “Apple Television Will be Revolutionary, But It Won’t Kill The Cable Companies”

4590e apple tv logo Forbes: “Apple Television Will be Revolutionary, But It Won’t Kill The Cable Companies”

As the world breathlessly awaits the arrival of the Apple television this fall, (or doesn’t, depends on who you talk to), some pundits are saying it will be the final nail in the coffin of the cable companies. Forbes contributor Eric Jackson doesn’t think so. Let’s take a look at his argument.

08b00 Apple TV BGR Forbes: “Apple Television Will be Revolutionary, But It Won’t Kill The Cable Companies”Jackson:

People who believe in this scenario say Apple revolutionized the telecom industry with the iPhone introduced 5 years ago so why wouldn’t they revolutionize cable in the same way.

Jackson has some bullet points listed, showing why people believe Apple will revolutionize the industry:

  • Everyone feels price gouged by their cable companies
  • They want their ESPN but not their Disney Family Channel
  • This bundled cable pricing is inefficient and Apple can make it more efficient
  • Apple TV will launch a pure “a la carte” unbundled pricing model for video content like they did for musical songs on iTunes
  • Apple is strong enough to force this change on the market

While we could be heading in this direction, Jackson says it could take 10-15 years to get there. And technology will change a lot over that timeframe.

Jackson feels that Apple is far more likely to partner with cable companies instead of killing them. He has his own bullet list for that.

  • First the analogy is wrong. If Apple was going to kill the cable companies with TV, they would have also had to kill the carriers when they introduced the iPhone. They would have had to come up with their own wifi transmission system to bypass the carriers. They chose to partner with them. And they will choose to partner with the cable companies.
  • Content rights make partnering a better strategy with TV – at first.
  • Hollywood makes more money and produces more content with the status quo bundled model. Apple (through Pixar’s ownership by Disney and cross-board seats) is very sympathetic to these interests of content makers.
  • Steve Jobs’ spouse is the biggest holder of Disney (DIS) stock and Bob Iger serves on the Apple Board. Do you think Tim Cook went in to a recent board meeting to discuss his strategy of how to let consumers buy ESPN on a purely a la carte basis?

Jackson’s thoughts of what Apple will do with the Apple TV fall along the line of Apple making a truly Internet connected TV, not the clunky and non-user friendly interfaces of competitors, Apple does the combo of hardware and software better than anyone, and that’s what will make the user experience “sing”.

Siri will be a part of it of course. She’s going to learn your viewing habits and start making suggestions. Get’s rid of all those damned buttons on the remotes too.

Apple will be on four screens in your home, not just the TV. There will be the Mac, the iPad, the iPhone, and the TV. All connected. All talking to each other. There are other manufacturers who make 3 of these 4 screens (e.g., Samsung and Google) but no other competitor who makes all 4. That’s huge. It’s a gigantic opportunity in front of Apple.

Jackson’s article goes into deeper detail than we have the space for here, and I highly recommend reading it. It’s an interesting point of view of the “Apple is Gonna Kill the Cable Companies” arguments.

On the 13th of June, 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) reported the names of the companies and firms which have applied for the generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) names. President and Chief Executive Officer, Rod Beckstrom said “We are standing at the cusp of a new era of online innovation,” he added “That means new businesses, new marketing tools, new jobs, and new ways to link communities and share information.” These comments were made by Beckstrom during the execution of a news conference in London and here the names of the organizations which have applied for different domain names were revealed. A note was made by the Senior Vice President Kurt Pritz which said that the applications will become matter for comments from public as well as opposition and will also bring along a evaluation system which is precise, objective and free.

Pritz said “A 60-day comment period begins today, allowing anyone in the world to submit comments on any application, and the evaluation panels will consider them. If anyone objects to an application and believes they have the grounds to do so, they can file a formal objection to the application. And they will have seven months to do that.” Among the total number of 1,930 applications received, 66 applications are geographic names, 116 applications are meant for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), for threads in writings like Arabic, Chinese, and Cyrillic. In order to view the names of the 1930 Applicants for the gTLDs, click here.

After been broken by the geographic regions of the ICANN, these applications were received from about a number of 60 countries and territories. 911 were received from North America, 675 from Europe, 303 are from Asia-Pacific, 24 from Latin America and the Caribbean and 17 from Africa too. The applications received from Latin America, Caribbean and Africa are likely to be the first ever gTLDs from these countries and territories. A huge range of Internet stakeholders had undergone international discussion and debate for a time span of seven years which resulted as new gTLD program.

LG Eclipse: Specs and Release Teased For Sprint and AT&T

LG is preparing to launch a new top-of-the-line Android smartphone for users in North America. It will come in two fantastic flavors: the LS970 for Sprint and the LG E970 for AT&T. The device features a quad-core Krait APQ8064 and a GPU of Adreno 320. It also has a Bluetooth 4.0 Certification and a User Agent Profile.

If rumors are true, the LS970 and the LG E970 will have a front camera of 13MP, a rear camera of 1.3MP, 2GB of RAM, internal memory of 16GB, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a removable battery of 2,100 mAh. The AT&T model sports a 4.67inch display with a resolution of 768 x 1280. This equals 320ppi and places it in Retina Display territory. The Sprint model has a lower and almost unnoticeable difference in its resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. With specs like these, it’s no wonder why LG Eclipse is dubbed as a “superphone” and may just be the best contender against the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Already made visible on Bluetooth SIG, the Nenamark benchmark site, the AnTuTu Lab benchmark site, and other online sites, it gives the impression that a release date on October 31 is bound to occur. Phone geeks in the US shall have their first glimpse on the “superphone” as it is predicted to be the next big thing in the world of smartphones. Whichever version hits the stores first is for fans to find out themselves. Price is still elusive and may just be revealed along with the usual Halloween tag line of “trick or treat.”
